17
17 is about people who want to 'start' their lives, who are looking for their purpose or passion and don't really know how to do that or where to start. I think we all have a period in our lives when we don't really know what our place in this big society is. This song wants to show people that that's okay and that it will all come together, even if it takes time.
She's Everywhere
She's Everywhere is about finding yourself. I have different versions of myself that different people can bring out in me. Sometimes I can be creative, sometimes I am more sporty, at times I am very social and sometimes I am more introverted. It's totally okay to have these different versions of yourself. With this song I want to encourage people to look for those different versions of themselves and learn to deal with them and accept them. A warm voice, a deep bass, a trumpet and a melow guitar are the base of this feel good song.
YOU
I am a bassist myself and wanted to make a song where bass guitar is the main instrument and that has a recognizable feeling for many people. This song is for anyone who has ever been in love but then realized that you were actually letting people walk all over you. I wanted to make the lyrics more powerful by adding a heavy guitar and danceable beats that matched the soaring vocals. From this, YOU was created.
Who is Aghogho?
Aghogho is Caro Abutoh's own music project. She just released her first two singles, 17 and YOU, in the run-up to her EP, which will be released on 16/01. Together with Simon Pas on the drums, Michiel Los on the guitar, Côme Lenseigne on the keys, Julia Warmerdam on the trumpet and Caro who sings the lead and plays the bass guitar, Aghogho was created this summer during a residency in Het Bos with self-written music. Aghogho is Caro's Nigerian name and means: child of god.
She has always been involved with music. She has been singing since she was young and playing the piano for a long time. Aghogho learned to make music during her studies. She is now getting her master's degree in Kleinkunst at the Conservatory of Antwerp. There aghogho underwent a three-year search where she found her own sound and voice by experimenting with different instruments, polyphony, rhythm and Ableton.
Aghogho's music can best be described as a mix of soul and Afropop with sometimes some funky patterns. She makes and plays acoustic music based on feeling, but she remains curious and eager to learn new things, which sometimes allows surprising elements to creep into her music. She is also half Nigerian and wants to express that in her music by using afrobeats that make you have no choice but to move. Aghogho has also been compared to Nilüfer Yanya!
Aghogho previously played twice in Het Bos and once in Vrij België in Antwerp. She is very much looking forward to further exploring her music journey. A warm voice, a deep bass, afrobeats, and lots of polyphony will ensure that you can't do anything but move! ;)
